Research, Inspiration, and Rehearsal
The physical manifestations of ALS that Katherine, the central character, experiences became the central image of the production.
In addition, as she surrounds herself with Beethoven's work we surrounded the performance space with his work, painting replicas of his notation around the space.
The rehearsal process included utilizing the Suzuki Method of Actor Training to build the physical endurance required for the performance. We also partnered with the local hospital system for work on staging Katherine's ALS symptoms and treatment.

Final 15 minutes of 33 Variations.
Community Collaborations
Sanford Neurology Center
We partnered with the Sanford Neurology Center to deepen our understanding of the material. We connected with several patients and family members who have experienced ALS as well as nurses and physical therapists to deepen our physical work. We also hosted a private performance for patients experiencing ALS as well as their family, friends and caretakers.
The WinterArts Festival - BeethovenFest
As part of the theatre's Community Collaboration model, we collaborated with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony for the production, as well as founding the WinterArts Festival. Designed to celebrate an artist each winter, the WinterArts Festival would encourage and promote work inspired by the featured artist. The inaugural WinterArts Festival, BeethovenFest, brought over a dozen organizations and businesses together and attracted over a thousand participants across the many opportunities.
